Can AI bring the legacy of Edith Piaf to a new audience through animation?

By merging dramaturgical thinking with the expansive capabilities of artificial intelligence, I ventured into reimagining Edith Piaf's legacy through the lens of animation. Envisioning the unmistakable voice of Argentinean actress Elena Roger breathing life into Piaf's story added a layer of authenticity and passion to this creative exercise. This project became a playground for imagination, where AI served as a collaborator in crafting visuals that captured the spirit of France’s most beloved singer. Inspired by moments from Piaf’s life, I sought to convey her resilience, vulnerability, and artistry, creating a poetic homage that blended technology with storytelling, memory, and myth.

This project was developed during my studies in AI and design at University of Borås, Sweden.

The inspiration for this project was sparked by the 2022 Buenos Aires production of Piaf by Pam Gems, where Elena Roger delivered a powerful performance as the iconic French chanteuse. This theatrical experience ignited the idea of reimagining Edith Piaf’s life as an animated film, a concept I first explored during my university studies. It began as research on blending art and technology, utilizing an array of AI tools, including text-to-image, text-to-speech, and video generators, to bring scenes from Piaf’s life to life.

Here are examples of imagery based on key scenes from the theatre play.
