Matias Salinas (Argentina, 1989)
With a point of departure in photography, my creative practice takes an interdisciplinary approach that fuses different media including video, painting and installation, with elements from theatre and scenography. The result is a body of work that explores themes of illusion, archive, identity, the depths of the human experience, and the ephemeral nature of both personal and collective memory. The complexities of these subjects are reflected in the process and the fragmentation of the artworks, often loaded with dreamy and lyrical undertones making narratives both alluring and ambivalent.
The backbone of much of what I do has a lot to do with theatre. As much spectator as creator, my work is based on an intensive visual examination and deconstruction of those themes connected to my own life experience as well as the cultural and social issues that most concern me. By creating whimsical and imaginary landscapes, I introduce the viewer to scenes where the real and the fictional, the physical and the allegorical, are combined with the present and the past.
Publishing, the physicality of images and printed matter are an important part of my practice, whether through publications produced from my own work, independent projects or by studying the book form in the context of artistic research.
